The dynamic, vibrant culture and mosaic of people is reflected in the many Kuala Lumpur hotels that have sprung up in recent years to cope with the huge influx of tourists and business visitors to this rapidly growing metropolis. From two-star apartments to luxury boutique and some of the cheapest four and five star hotels in the world, visitors to this city will find luxurious accommodation, fine dining and modern state-of-the-art business facilities on a par with the best the world has to offer.

KL is a relatively new Malaysian city dating back only 150 years. It started off as a small sleepy tin-mining village which developed into an important trading post. It suffered many years of civil war, disease, fires and floods which destroyed many of the city's thatch and wood structures.

These were replaced with buildings of brick and tile with fine Chinese carpentry that mirrored that of shop houses in southern China, with "five foot ways". This resulted in distinct eclectic shop house architecture typical to this region. In 1896 KL was chosen as capital of the Federated Malay States and has been transformed into a bustling city of 1.5 million people with an increasing number of travelers wanting to explore and discover this bustling city.

Kuala Lumpur is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers in the Klang valley, 35 km from the coast and in the Malay language means 'muddy confluence'. It is surrounded by mountains in the east, north and south and in the west by the Strait of Malacca. It experiences a year-round equatorial tropical rain forest climate characterized by long hot sunny days and a high rainfall. Visitors to the island, particularly during the southwest monsoon season from September to April, should not forget their rain gear as rain can be frequent and heavy.

Guests to Kuala Lumpur hotels will be amazed at the rich diversity of culture, language and ethnic groups in the city. The predominant ethnic groups are the Malays, Chinese and Indians. The main language is Malay but many other ethnic languages and dialects can be heard. English, too, is widely spoken, particularly in KL and many of the staff employed by Kuala Lumpur hotels are multi-lingual. The predominant religion is Islam with many other religions represented including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and various Chinese religions.

Tourism plays a major role in the city's economy providing income, employment and business opportunities and as such Kuala Lumpur hotels have become an important feature in the landscape of the city. There are many large fine international hotel chains present as well smaller boutique hotels and cheap accommodation options for the many backpackers and young travelers passing through the region.

Many are situated in the business and commercial hub of the city while others provide the perfect launching pad for shopping expeditions. With its 66 shopping malls, KL is the fashion and retail hub of Malaysia where guests to Kuala Lumpur hotels can literally shop till they drop.

The main shopping areas in Kuala Lumpur are the Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman area, Jalan Petaling/ Jalan Bandar area and Jalan Bukit Bintang where guests can purchase anything from electronics, fashion merchandise, branded accessories and IT products to local handcraft of intricate silver, brass, pewter, pottery and Batiks of silk and cotton. Art and curio items from the east and dazzling carpets and rugs in vibrant colours and intricate designs are very hard for visitors to KL to resist.

The architecture, as reflected in Kuala Lumpur hotels, is a blend of old colonial influences representing the eclectic mix of cultures that make up the city. Being a relatively young city, most of the buildings are modern with Moorish, Tudor, Neo-Gothic or Grecian-Spanish influences. Many of the original old shop-houses of Chinese design and influence can still be see particularly in Chinatown and other older areas of the city.

Some buildings have a local Islamic style with geometric motifs and elaborate designs. The tall modern glass shell Petronas Twin Towers were designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art. Many of the modern Kuala Lumpur hotels that now fill the skyline are multi-story buildings of modern and postmodern architecture.

The décor of Kuala Lumpur hotels is warm and inviting, some with bright colors and others decorated in warm earthy tones. Hotels cater for both leisure and businesses guests, and provide all the luxury and convenience required by modern travelers. Included with this is the unique touch of Malaysian hospitality that promises a memorable and pleasant stay.

Facilities and amenities range from very simple to state-of-the-art and include business centers, conference and convention centers to rival any other in the world and luxurious spas where guests can pamper themselves with wonderful spa treatments and Balinese massages.

Some guest rooms are fully equipped with all the mod cons that include tea and coffee maker, mini-bar and refrigerator, data points and internet access to mention but a few. Many have private bathrooms with Spanish marble, deep bathtubs and separate showers.

Fine dining, too, can be experienced in many Kuala Lumpur hotels with restaurants serving a vast array of international and local foods. However, KL has a wealth of restaurants, coffee shops and street carts offering amazing authentic Malaysian cuisine so guests to Kuala Lumpur hotels can chose to eat in-house or out and are guaranteed to find something to suit their palate.

This magical city of unique sights, sounds and smells, fusion of cultures and exotic foods welcomes guests with open arms. Kuala Lumpur hotels provide the perfect launching pad to explore the wonders of this city while at the same time providing accommodation to suit all needs, fine dining and modern facilities that will appeal to both leisure and business guests alike.
